Your holiday is booked… what happens next?

The Countdown is on...

Your trip is officially booked — how exciting! Now it’s time to get everything sorted so you can travel with confidence. Here’s a simple guide to what to do before you go… and don’t worry, Hop On Board Travel is with you every step of the way.

🛂 Check Your Passport & Visa Requirements

Before anything else, make sure your passport is valid for your trip.

Many destinations require your passport to have at least 6 months validity remaining from your date of travel, and in some cases, extra blank pages too. It’s also really important that the name on your passport matches your booking exactly — even small differences can cause issues at the airport.

You should also check visa requirements for your destination. Some countries require you to apply for a visa or travel authorisation in advance, while others may allow entry without one — it all depends on where you’re travelling.

If your passport is due to expire soon, or you need to apply for a new one, we recommend doing this as early as possible to avoid delays.

You can check the latest passport rules and apply online via the official

👉 UK Government website

Top tip: If you’re travelling within Europe, rules can vary depending on the country, so always double check before you go.

If you’re unsure about anything at all, just ask.

🛡️ Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is one of the most important things to arrange after booking your holiday — not just before you travel.

It helps protect you in case of cancellations, medical emergencies, delays, or lost luggage.

While I can guide you on what to look for, I’m not authorised to sell travel insurance directly. This is because travel insurance is a financial product regulated in the UK, and only firms authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority can arrange or sell policies.

That said, I’m always happy to point you in the right direction.

Here are a couple of well-known providers you may wish to consider:

  • Holiday Extras
  • Covered2Go

Please make sure you choose a policy that suits your needs, including cover for any pre-existing medical conditions and the full duration of your trip.

Top tip: The earlier you take out insurance, the sooner you’re covered for things like cancellation.

If you’re unsure what type of cover you need, just ask — Hop On Board Travel is here to help every step of the way.

📄 Review Your Booking & Payment Details

Once your holiday is booked, take a few minutes to carefully check all your documents and make a note of your payment schedule.

Make sure everything is correct, including:

  • Names (must match passports exactly)
  • Travel dates
  • Departure airport
  • Baggage allowance
  • Board basis (e.g. self-catering, half board, all inclusive)
  • Transfers
  • Any special requests

It’s also important to keep track of your payments:

  • Check your balance due date
  • Set reminders so you don’t miss any payments
  • Keep an eye on any instalment plans if applicable

Missing a payment deadline could result in your holiday being cancelled, so it’s always best to stay one step ahead.
